Tarik Skubal loses in Dodgers debut, team loses fifth straight

Tarik Skubal made his Dodgers debut on August 4, 2026, facing the playoff-bound Chicago Cubs. This encounter followed a much-discussed trade acquisition of Skubal over the weekend before the trade deadline. The Cubs, entering the game with a record of 64-49, went on to secure a 5-1 victory, which extended the Dodgers' season-high losing streak to five games, bringing their record to 69-45.

In his first outing with the Dodgers, Skubal pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking two. While he struggled to find his breaking pitches early on, he demonstrated his ability by overpowering several hitters and benefitting from solid outfield defense. While Tucker hit a home run in the second inning, that was the only score for the Dodgers while Skubal was on the mound. Cubs starter Javier Assad faced challenges but received support with two double plays from his infield. The Cubs added two more runs in the seventh with a double from Swanson followed by a single from Crow-Armstrong, who later stole second base and was knocked in by Suzuki. The Cubs’ bullpen maintained their lead, including a clean eighth inning from new acquisition Ryan Zeferjahn. Hoerner capped the scoring with a home run in the eighth, sealing the 5-1 victory for the Cubs.

From the Dodgers' perspective, Skubal generally performed well, albeit not dominant. With indications of improvement and a clear need for better team performance highlighted, the Dodgers faced the reality of their five-game losing streak.
