Will Lankshear shines as Middlesbrough defeats Wrexham

Will Lankshear made an impressive debut, securing a 1-0 victory for Middlesbrough against Wrexham in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Lankshear, a £10m summer transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, scored the only goal of the match in the 61st minute with a well-executed first-time volley.

The match began with Middlesbrough nearly taking the lead in the seventh minute when Adilson Malanda attempted to finish Sebastian Berhalter's cross from close range, but Wrexham's goalkeeper Danny Ward produced a remarkable point-blank save. Wrexham had a chance of their own when Danny Imray failed to connect properly with Callum Doyle's cross and later, Sam Smith's low shot was saved by Middlesbrough's Sol Brynn just before half-time.

In the second half, Lankshear nearly scored earlier but his shot curled just over the bar. However, he soon found the net when Leo Castledine headed Jeremy Sarmiento's cross into his path; Lankshear skillfully swivelled and volleyed the ball into the far corner, giving Middlesbrough the lead.

Middlesbrough almost extended their advantage in the closing minutes, but Morgan Whittaker's shot struck the post. After the game, Middlesbrough's manager Kim Hellberg praised Lankshear's immediate impact on the team. He remarked, "He was very impressive and the most impressive thing has been seeing how well he has worked on the training ground. How hard he works and how much he wants to learn. It’s a joy to watch, and when you add the person he is to the quality he has as a footballer, you have a very good striker. I’m happy to have him here."

Wrexham's manager, Phil Parkinson, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, especially given their recent travel back from a pre-season tour in the United States. He said, "I thought we had enough half-chances, particularly in the first half, to have progressed in the competition. The game really separated from one quality finish from their lad. We had some good build-up play but just didn’t quite have that clinical edge. It was a big ask in terms of coming back from America on Monday... There were a lot of positives in the performance."
