College football winners, losers: Raiola shines, Wisconsin struggles

In Week 9 of college football, unexpected results marked the landscape, particularly affecting several teams in the AP Top 25. Five teams among the ranked faced losses, including three at the hands of unranked rivals. The No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs showcased dominance by overwhelming the Florida Gators. However, the No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers required a dramatic late-field goal from their kicker to secure a win.

In a display of resilience, Indiana, under coach Curt Cignetti, trailed until the final seconds when Minnesota kicked a 60-yard field goal. Cignetti's clock management was questionable as he allowed 40 seconds to drain without calling a timeout. Nevertheless, Indiana responded with a miraculous 60-yard field goal and clinched a 23-16 victory in overtime over the Golden Gophers, illustrating Cignetti's knack for pulling off wins despite challenges.

In stark contrast, the Wisconsin Badgers suffered a significant setback. After some promising performances had them back in the Top 25 under coach Luke Fickell, Wisconsin was humiliated by Iowa with a 30-0 defeat. The Badgers struggled offensively, gaining only 52 rushing yards, while Iowa's quarterback Hank Brown executed an impressive game, completing 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. This loss ended any momentum from their previous strong showing against No. 16 USC.

Amidst the turmoil, the Texas Tech Red Raiders emerged victorious. After a disheartening loss to Cincinnati, coach Joey McGuire turned to backup quarterback Thomas Castellanos, which paid off as Texas Tech triumphed over both No. 22 Houston and No. 22 Arizona, positioning themselves in the Big 12 title chase. Their upcoming challenges include games against No. 24 Oklahoma State and Baylor, which could be decisive.

In Oregon, quarterback Dylan Raiola enjoyed a much-needed resurgence. After struggling initially against No. 20 Northwestern, where the Ducks fell behind 10-0, Raiola turned the tide by completing 22 of 31 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns. His performance, one of his best yet, came after offensive coordinator Jay Johnson improved strategies to leverage the talents of Oregon's skilled receivers. Despite Oregon’s slim playoff hopes, next week’s matchup against No. 2 Ohio State presents an opportunity for Raiola to further validate his comeback.

On the flip side, the Oklahoma Sooners continued to struggle under coach Brent Venables, staring down the possibility of a third losing season in five years.
