DR Congo Hopes Match in Spain Proceeds Despite Ebola Ban

The Democratic Republic of Congo expressed hope to proceed with a World Cup warm-up match against Chile in Spain despite local authorities prohibiting the fixture due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the African nation. The mayor of La Linea de la Concepcion made this decision, highlighting health concerns despite the Congolese team being based primarily in Europe for their preparations in Belgium.
The team, preparing for the World Cup, had originally planned a friendly match in Liège against Denmark on Wednesday, followed by the game in Spain on the upcoming Monday before departing for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Juan Franco, the mayor of La Línea, stated, "The health situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo regarding the Ebola virus, together with the documentation provided, which does not convincingly demonstrate there is no risk at all, means this is the most prudent choice." His office released this statement on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) communicated that the team has adhered to all health, sporting, and regulatory requirements. They indicated ongoing discussions with local and Spanish Football Federation authorities to seek a resolution that would allow the match to proceed.
Congo's coach, Sebastien Desabre, was caught off-guard by the mayor's decision when asked during a press conference. He maintained optimism regarding a solution, hinting at the possibility of relocating the match to another stadium in Spain. Desabre noted, "The DR Congo national team respects the decision, which is based on fears of Ebola. We communicate with FIFA daily about the situation, and our medical team maintains constant contact with FIFA while strictly following health protocols."
The Congolese team, participating in their first World Cup in 52 years, plans to base themselves in Houston. Their group stage matches begin against Portugal on June 17, followed by a game against Colombia in Guadalajara on June 23, and concluding with Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 27.
