Padres Ink Giolito to One-Year Contract

Giolito's extended free agency was unexpected, and he had drawn interest from other teams, including the Cubs, before ultimately signing with the Padres.

To prepare for his return to the big leagues, Giolito will begin his journey with game action at Single-A Lake Elsinore. The Padres have not set a specific timeline for his call-up, but his contract stipulates that he must be added to the major league roster within 25 days. This deadline places his potential debut around May 17, although there is a possibility he could join the team sooner if he performs well in the minors.

Despite the injury challenges, the front of the Padres' rotation remains relatively strong, with Michael King and Randy Vásquez performing well in the early season. However, the team is still in need of solidifying the middle of their rotation, especially with Pivetta currently on the injured list due to a flexor strain in his right elbow. Manager Craig Stammen has indicated that Pivetta's recovery could take weeks or even months.

As the Padres navigate these injury challenges, the addition of Giolito represents a proactive step towards strengthening their pitching staff.
