Flying Eagles, Golden Eaglets Appoint New Coaches

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed Abdu Maikaba and Eboboritse Uwejamomere as head coaches for the Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets, respectively, on May 7, 2026. This decision was made as part of the NFF's effort to revitalize its youth teams following inconsistent performances in recent years. The appointments were approved by the NFF Executive Committee based on recommendations from the federation's Technical and Development Committee, with both coaches bringing distinct backgrounds to Nigeria's leading youth teams.

Abdu Maikaba, an experienced domestic coach, took on the role of head coach for the Flying Eagles, Nigeria's U20 national team. Meanwhile, Uwejamomere, known for his youth development expertise, took command of the Golden Eaglets, the U17 side. This strategic change arrives at a critical moment, as Nigeria's youth football has experienced difficulties maintaining the country's historical reputation as a powerhouse in producing football talent.

The Flying Eagles had a decent run in the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals, but failed to replicate that success two years later in Chile. Their performance showed a decline, which has raised concerns about the team's competitiveness at an international level. Similarly, the Golden Eaglets, despite being record winners of the FIFA U17 World Cup, have missed qualifying for the last two tournaments in 2023 and 2025. They are also set to miss the 2026 edition as they did not qualify for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

The decline in the youth teams' fortunes has raised questions about the focus and direction of youth development in Nigerian football. Under the previous management of Nduka Ugbade, the Golden Eaglets reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations but lost in a qualification-deciding match against Burkina Faso. His successor, Manu Garba, faced challenges in restoring the team's previous dominance. The NFF’s recent appointments appear to lean towards blending experience with technical continuity.

In announcing the changes, NFF emphasized Maikaba's broad experience with Nigerian clubs and his past involvement with youth national teams. He is well-respected in the Nigerian Premier Football League for his management roles in clubs such as Enyimba FC and Kano Pillars, with a notable achievement being the 2017 Federation Cup victory with Akwa United FC.

Uwejamomere’s role marks a shift towards integrating technical analysis and structured youth development. He has a history as a coach-analyst with the senior men’s national team and has contributed to various football academies, including work with Millwall FC and Nottingham Forest in England.

With contrasting profiles that combine local league experience with innovative player development methods, both coaches face the immediate task of restoring competitiveness to teams that previously dominated youth football on the continent and globally.
