Erasmus Adopts Strategic Approach for Upcoming Rugby Matches

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus adopted a strategic approach for the next leg of the international season by naming a group of 43 players who gathered in Johannesburg on Sunday to begin their preparations for the Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday, 8 August, as well as for the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand. Five players were released for their franchise matches against the All Blacks.

A total of 10 seasoned Springboks returned from injuries that had sidelined them for varying periods, including Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager (both locks), Franco Mostert (utility forward), Siya Kolisi (loose forward), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Handre Pollard (both flyhalves), Ethan Hooker, Canan Moodie (both utility backs), Andre Esterhuizen (flanker and centre), and Morne van den Berg (scrumhalf).

The five players released to their franchises were Ntuthuko Mchunu (prop), Evan Roos (No 8), Andre-Hugo Venter (hooker), Embrose Papier (scrumhalf), and Jaco Williams (wing). Ruben van Heerden (lock), who made his Test debut against Wales last Saturday, was the only player omitted from the two groups after moving from the DHL Stormers to Montpellier, although he would remain on standby for the team.

Erasmus stated, "We put a lot of thought into how we will manage the entire group of players to give everyone a chance to stake a claim for places in the squad for the RGR series. We decided that splitting the squad into two groups would be best for the Springbok team and the players to play their way into the squad."

He noted the importance of providing players returning from injury with game time, explaining that depending on their recovery during the upcoming training camp, decisions would be made regarding who would travel to Argentina. The remaining players in the 43-man squad would stay in Johannesburg to prepare for the Tests against New Zealand.

The players released to their franchises would also have the opportunity to face the All Blacks in midweek games, which Erasmus viewed as beneficial for their final selections for the RGR.

Erasmus acknowledged the challenge posed by Argentina, mentioning their strong performance in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship and recent victories over teams like Scotland, England, and Wales. He remembered their last meeting in Argentina in 2024, noting it was difficult to secure a win in that environment.

The Springboks had the week off to spend with families, with the squad set to reconvene in Johannesburg for a week of training before two groups departed for Buenos Aires the following Sunday and Monday. They had four RGR Tests lined up against the All Blacks — at Ellis Park in Johannesburg (22 August), the DHL Stadium in Cape Town (29 August), FNB Stadium in Johannesburg (5 September), and M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, USA (12 September). It was a significant time for the Springboks as they continued their preparations for the demanding international schedule ahead.
