Giants-Dolphins Brawl: Players Removed, Potential Punishment Looms
Newsroom

During their joint practice on August 20, 2026, the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins experienced a series of fights that escalated into an all-out brawl, resulting in multiple players being removed from live drills. Giants' quarterback Jameis Winston, offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor, and Dolphins' offensive lineman Austin Jackson missed parts of practice due to disciplinary reasons. Giants head coach John Harbaugh reported that Eluemunor was automatically removed from practice after throwing a punch at an opponent, following the rules these teams agreed upon.
Harbaugh downplayed the severity of the altercations, stating that such fights are not uncommon in the NFL during training camp. "It's just football," Harbaugh remarked after practice, noting that the environment lacks the strict rules imposed during regular games. As tensions flare among players trying to establish their presence, incidents can quickly escalate.
Joint practices represent one of the first chances in the season for players to engage physically with opponents in different jerseys. This often causes pent-up aggression to spill over into fights, as seen in Miami. In earlier skirmishes, second-year Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter threw a punch at Dolphins' offensive lineman Patrick Paul, while another incident involved several prominent Giants defenders. Kayvon Thibodeaux retaliated against Austin Jackson after Jackson punched New York rookie Arvell Reese.
The NFL had previously warned teams against violent conduct during joint practices. In a memo to all 32 franchises, the league made it clear that fighting would lead to fines for individuals and clubs, as well as potential loss of practice privileges. Other teams, like the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, faced a $500,000 fine each for similar incidents that took place days earlier. Whether the NFL will impose penalties on the Giants and Dolphins will depend on their review of the practice footage.
