Bellingham Invests in Birmingham Phoenix Cricket Team

Jude Bellingham, the England and Real Madrid football star, has made headlines by purchasing a minority stake in the Birmingham Phoenix cricket franchise, part of The Hundred competition. The 22-year-old, who has a deep connection to Birmingham, stated that he feels a sense of obligation to give back to the city that shaped him.

Bellingham acquired a 1.2% share in the franchise, which is based at Edgbaston, for a price exceeding £800,000. This investment includes contributions from Warwickshire County Cricket Club and American investment firm Knighthead Capital. The Phoenix franchise was valued at approximately £82 million during a recent investment round.

Growing up in Stourbridge, Bellingham began his career with Birmingham City, where he became a fan favorite before moving to Borussia Dortmund at just 17 years old. His love for cricket is well-documented; he played the sport during his youth for Hagley in Worcestershire. In a statement, Bellingham expressed his affection for Birmingham, saying, "I love Birmingham. I’m very grateful for what the whole city of Birmingham has done for me."

Bellingham's involvement in cricket comes at a time when he is heavily focused on his football career, but he sees this as an opportunity to contribute positively to the community. He emphasized the importance of sports for youth, stating, "It’s crucial to get our kids in the city out there playing sports. Some people will enjoy football, some people enjoy cricket."

The young star aims to leverage his platform to encourage children to explore various sports, highlighting that not all kids have the same opportunities he had growing up. He remarked, "If I can get involved in something like this to shine a light on an opportunity for kids, then even better."

Stuart Cain, the chief executive at Warwickshire, welcomed Bellingham's investment, noting his understanding of high-performance sports and the positive impact they can have on young people's lives. "Jude loved cricket as a youngster and has wanted to be involved since The Hundred first went to market to secure investors," Cain said.

As the Birmingham Phoenix prepares for the upcoming season, they will be led by Jacob Bethell, one of the brightest prospects in English cricket, with Australian star Ellyse Perry captaining the women's team. Their first match is scheduled for July 24, with the final taking place at Lord’s on August 16.
