Sonny Baker Poised for Test Debut After Challenging Start

Sonny Baker, the 23-year-old England bowler, hopes to overcome his difficult debut experiences as he prepares for potential opportunities with the national team this summer. Baker's journey, filled with some ups and downs, started with a challenging one-day international debut against South Africa at Headingley, where he recorded figures of 0-76—the highest runs conceded by an England bowler on debut. Despite the setback, Baker remains optimistic, noting that the circumstances of that game were unfavorable, as England was bowled out for just 131 runs.

Just three weeks later, Baker had another chance in a T20 match against Ireland, but it did not go as planned, with Ireland scoring 52 runs off his four overs. Reflecting on this outing, Baker admits he was not entirely himself; he struggled to maintain his usual energetic demeanor and was too focused on overcoming the memory of his ODI debut. "My little brother Blaise said I hadn’t been myself. I can’t help but get into the game; I have to be true to myself," he stated.

Baker is poised to receive further chances to represent England, especially given the current vacancies in the pace-bowling department. With several veteran bowlers like Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood likely exiting the Test scene, the team is seeking new talent to fill the void left by their combined 1,619 wickets. Key players like Brydon Carse are injured, while Jofra Archer competes in the Indian Premier League, and Matthew Potts faced challenges during his last outing in the Ashes.

Baker distinguished himself this season with his pace, having clocked speeds of up to 92mph. He commented on his improved performance: "It feels like I’ve put on a bit of pace since last year. When I maintain my momentum, the ball speed is higher. Last year, I wasn’t getting the right energy on the ball. This year has been better."

He expresses enthusiasm for fast bowling, mentioning the legendary Dale Steyn as a major influence. Baker stated, "Bowling fast is just fun. It has to be. What do people want to see? Big sixes and fast bowlers. Everyone loved watching Jofra Archer in the 2019 Ashes."

Baker’s commitment extends beyond the pitch; he has been proactive in maintaining his fitness, even sharing his experience with making bone broth to aid recovery from past injuries. Recently, he received sponsorship from a bone broth company, which provides him with the needed nutritional support.

With only ten first-class matches under his belt, Baker is eager for more match opportunities. As Hampshire prepares for a busy schedule ahead of England’s first Test against New Zealand on June 4, Baker's potential inclusion hinges on the team's assessments of his growing capabilities. "I’ve added pace and control. I am a significantly better bowler than I was last year," he affirmed.
