Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders declared he feels like his old self again nearly a year after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous bladder. The robotic procedure reconstructed his bladder using part of his intestine, allowing him to return to the sideline faster than expected. Sanders informed The Associated Press that he now considers himself "cancer-free" and noted that the recovery process changed his perspective on time, health, and coaching.
Last summer, Sanders was away from Boulder as he underwent treatment; however, he indicated that he is now healthier, more active, and more confident while overseeing the Buffs' offseason activities. He recognized that the procedure allowed him precious time that would have otherwise been lost, stating, "I was fighting at this time last year. I was walking out on the property with a bag of blood and also urine and trying to get back." He referred to the surgery as a "time machine" that helped him get back in the game.
Additionally, Sanders took the opportunity to raise awareness about men's health issues and the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. He pointed out that the robotic system reduced his hospital stay and facilitated his return to coaching.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Sanders expressed optimism about his program’s progress, highlighting the development of quarterback Julian Lewis and the cohesion within the team as encouraging signs. "I have the best coaching staff I've ever featured. Everybody's unified," he remarked.
He also mentioned his son Shedeur Sanders, now with the Cleveland Browns, and Travis Hunter, echoing a simple desire for their happiness. Colorado enters the season revitalized, and Sanders conveyed that the most challenging period is behind them, signaling that the Buffaloes are moving forward.
