Marlie Packer scored two tries in her final appearance for Saracens as the north London team secured a record fourth league title with a dominant triumph over first-time finalists Trailfinders at Twickenham Stoop. The former England captain, who is set to join Harlequins next season after nine years with Saracens, notched her double within the first half of the match, helping the team to a commanding 26-0 lead at the break.
Saracens went on to score a total of eight tries, crushing Trailfinders 52-14 to ensure their first Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) title and surpassing Gloucester-Hartpury as the most successful team in English women's rugby, having previously won the Premier 15s in 2018, 2019, and 2022. Saracens were eager to regain the title after being defeated by Gloucester-Hartpury in last year's final. With a star-studded lineup featuring two-time World Cup winner Packer and current world player of the year Sophie de Goede, Saracens displayed a masterclass in rugby, leaving their London rivals in their wake.
"We were coming here to win it and not be a bridesmaid," Packer stated after lifting the trophy alongside co-captain Zoe Harrison. "Nine years and a four-time champion with Saracens. They are all really special."
Director of rugby Alex Austerberry stated that they aim to continue their dominance in the league: "Now the target is on our back and we have got to make sure we keep pushing it forward as that is what champions do."
The final's outcome was hardly in doubt after Packer's quick opening tries, supported by contributions from the likes of Omokhuale, Gregson, and Breach. Trailfinders managed to score two tries of their own through Montiel and Burton, but the match was largely characterized by Saracens' superior experience and play.
Despite the heavy defeat, Trailfinders captain Kate Zackary expressed optimism for the future, indicating that their team, having only joined the league in 2023, is still on the rise. "We are walking away in second place. That is an amazing place to be. We are at the top of the mountain and people will want to take us down."
As for Packer, who was emotional after the match, she noted, "I am going to miss everything. The people, the changing room, and the whole aura of Saracens. I'm excited to now take myself outside of my comfort zone."
