'Unrealistic' to expect Steele starting for Cubs in 2026, Hoyer says

The Chicago Cubs faced a challenging situation with starting pitching injuries in 2026, with baseball operations president Jed Hoyer indicating that it is unlikely key pitcher Justin Steele will return to the rotation before 2027. Steele, who is recovering from left elbow surgery, will likely not be ready to start games by the end of the current season, Hoyer stated in an interview on The Score on Tuesday.
Hoyer noted that Steele's return to the major league team remains "unclear." He expressed a desire for positive news regarding Steele's health, emphasizing that the main concern is for Steele to rehabilitate effectively. Hoyer remarked, "Whether or not he can help us at the end of the season I think is unclear. I think it’s probably unrealistic to think he’s gonna be fully stretched out at any point, so if he does help us, I think it’s gonna be in shorter bursts."
On Monday, Steele was scheduled to throw for the first time since suffering a flexor strain in April, which set back his recovery. The 30-year-old is in the initial stages of his throwing program with the Cubs. Manager Craig Counsell informed reporters that Steele would advance through a few weeks of this program before a decision on his next steps was made.
During a recent homestand, Hoyer had shared some optimism about Steele's ability to pitch for Chicago in 2026, although he admitted that the word "optimism" may have been too strong considering Steele's recent setbacks. Hoyer expressed hope that Steele could avoid further issues and potentially contribute later in the season. Hoyer added that seeing Steele healthy would also aid in roster planning for the offseason.
The Cubs also welcomed the return of Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd, who had been on the injured list due to a left meniscus issue. However, they are still without veteran righty Jameson Taillon, sidelined with a hamstring strain, and budding ace Cade Horton, who will miss the season due to right elbow surgery. The bullpen has also been affected, with closer Daniel Palencia having made two trips to the injured list.
With his career ERA at 3.30 and recognition as an All-Star in 2023, Steele's presence would have significantly benefited the Cubs this season. However, the team’s cautious approach to his return emphasizes the need for Steele to demonstrate his health before the offseason. Hoyer stressed the importance of having a fully fit Steele in the future, acknowledging the void left by his absence and the team’s need for his skills on the mound.
