García on Belgium's Loss to Spain: 'We Made Errors'
Newsroom

Rudi García, the Belgium national team coach, expressed his disappointment after his team's defeat to Spain, stating, "I told them we could be very proud of what we achieved. We looked Spain in the eyes. Luck intervened. We lost our captain and Courtois. It's luck. The referee did not see the handball in the VAR review, which put us in a disadvantageous position. Against Spain, you cannot make mistakes, and we made a few."
Regarding his team's performance, García noted, "Spain was better in the first half, but we equalized. We pressured them, created difficulties, and could have taken the advantage." He indicated that it wasn't the right time to address questions about his future, emphasizing his disappointment over players who wouldn't return to the national team, remarking, "This is not the time for me to be asked about that; that's the only important thing. We are very disappointed with how it turned out. We believed we could eliminate the Spanish team. We did everything, but it was not enough."
On Thibaut Courtois' injury, García remarked, "Part of high-level sport includes injuries. We must be able to step up to the challenge. He was excellent in every aspect, including his long game. We did not want to risk worsening the injury, which is why I made that decision. I spoke with Courtois, and he did not mention anything else. Unfortunately, he could not finish the match due to a muscular injury. He is one of the best, but he wasn't at one hundred percent, and muscle injuries can accumulate. If you train less because of frequent injuries, that can be problematic. With him, we are stronger, but I have nothing more to add."
