LaLiga Shines with MVPs in World Cup Quarterfinals
Newsroom

LaLiga showcased its strength in the World Cup quarterfinals as all four MVPs from the knockout stage played in the Spanish league. Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham, and Julián Álvarez were recognized as the best players in the four matches of this decisive round. The stars from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid excelled just when the tournament reached its critical phase.
In the ongoing rivalry with the Premier League, the battle for MVPs is closely contested. Currently, the English league leads with a tally of 22 MVPs compared to LaLiga's 21. Notably, Casemiro, who is currently without a team, is credited as a Premier League player since he completed the season with Manchester United. If we consider him as a player without a team, it would result in a tie of 21.
The list of top performers includes not only the main stars from LaLiga's big three but also players from clubs like Villarreal, featuring Pépé and Pape Gueye, as well as Lo Celso from Betis and Ounahi from Girona. Among the four semifinalists, of the 104 players called up from France, Spain, England, and Argentina, LaLiga contributed 29 players while the Premier League supplied 40. The breakdown shows LaLiga providing 17 players for Spain and 12 for the rest of the national teams.
The contest between LaLiga and the Premier League played out on the world stage, establishing both leagues as key players in the most prestigious international competition. With four matches remaining, including two semifinals, the match for third and fourth place, and the final, the decision on which league claims the MVP is yet to be finalized.
Furthermore, the performances of France, Spain, England, and Argentina prompted the scheduling of several LaLiga matches to be pushed back. Javier Tebas announced that all clubs with a semifinalist would postpone their first match to ensure players received the necessary rest as stipulated by the collective agreement. This means that the matches including Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad, Barcelona vs. Athletic, Atlético vs. Málaga, Celta vs. Osasuna, and Valencia vs. Betis would not take place on the weekend of August 14, 15, and 16, which marks the league's kickoff, but would likely be rescheduled to later between the second and third rounds.
