Manchester United Abandons Pre-Season Tour for 2026
Newsroom

Manchester United underwent an unusual pre-season preparation in 2026, opting to abandon their traditional 'showpiece' tour, including a visit to the USA. Instead, the club decided to remain in Europe, beginning their pre-season with a match against Wrexham in Helsinki on Saturday. Following this, they are set to face Rosenborg in Trondheim the following week, Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1, and Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8. A training camp in Ireland will feature a clash against Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12, prior to concluding with a game against AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15.
This marks a significant shift for a club that has heavily relied on international tours for both revenue and fan engagement. Last summer, Manchester United ended their pre-season tour in the US against Everton, part of a strategy tied to a £300 million shirt sponsorship deal with the California-based tech company Snapdragon. Over the past few years, the players enjoyed the opportunities and privileges that US tours provided, including relative privacy compared to more intense receptions in other regions.
Showpiece tours, which typically attract large crowds, have generated substantial income for the club. For instance, United reportedly earned £7.5 million in the previous summer from participating in the Premier League Summer Series and a similar amount from tours in Asia. Though the club usually combines these international visits with friendly matches in Scandinavia or Scotland, preparations for the first home game against Ipswich on August 30 delayed their ability to host matches at Old Trafford.
This year's decision to forgo lengthy travels is primarily attributed to the scheduling challenges posed by the World Cup, which involved many United stars. As contracts dictate, players are entitled to up to four weeks of holiday post-tournament. Therefore, several key squad members like Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, and Lisandro Martinez were unavailable until the weekend. Meanwhile, other players, including Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, were already on holiday.
United's pre-season will culminate as they begin the 2026-27 season with a match against newly-promoted Hull City a week later, reflecting a stark contrast to their prior extensive travel commitments.
