Intense Competition for Semi-Final Spots in Currie Cup
Newsroom
The race for semi-final spots neared boiling point over the weekend as the sixth round of the Carling Currie Cup was staged, marking a crucial opportunity for teams aiming to secure a top-four place. Three matches took place on Friday, with the final contest scheduled for Sunday. All matches were broadcast live on SuperSport.
The weekend kicked off with a high-stakes match between the third-placed Airlink Pumas and the Suzuki Griquas, the reigning champions currently topping the table. This match occurred at 15h00 at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. Following this, the Vodacom Bulls XV faced off against the DHL Stormers XXIII at 17h05 in Pretoria, and finally, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV played the Fidelity ADT Lions in Pietermaritzburg at 19h15. Sunday's action saw the Toyota Cheetahs and Sanlam Boland Kavaliers compete in Bloemfontein, starting at 15h00.
The Griquas and Cheetahs shared top standings with 21 points, while the Pumas (17) and Boland Cavaliers (16) occupied the remaining spots in the top four. The Lions (13), Stormers XXIII (11), and Sharks XV (10) were still hopeful, whereas the Bulls XV (4) struggled to find their first win of the season.
The match between the Airlink Pumas and Suzuki Griquas was particularly critical, likely influencing the battle for home semi-final advantage. This matchup came after the Griquas delivered a commanding 55-21 victory over the Sharks XV the previous week. Holding the best points difference in the competition (+73), the Griquas had won four of their five matches since their opening-round loss to the Kavaliers.
Conversely, the Pumas, having strengthened their semi-final chances with a comfortable 29-7 win against the Stormers XXIII last week, knew a home victory could lift them alongside or even above the league leaders heading into the final round. The Pumas had recovered momentum with back-to-back wins after starting the season with two losses.
In another encounter, the Bulls XV, seeking crucial points in their campaign, were at the bottom of the standings after suffering a fifth consecutive defeat. Despite their impressive score against the Cheetahs, the Bulls were still winless. They faced the Stormers XXIII, who, despite losses, remained competitive in the playoff race.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV had an essential matchup against the Fidelity ADT Lions. The Sharks were seventh in the standings after facing a heavy defeat from the Griquas, while the Lions, sitting in fifth place, aimed to recover from a previous loss against the Cavaliers.
The final game of the round featured the Toyota Cheetahs and the Sanlam Boland Cavaliers. Boland had emerged stronger this season, maintaining a semi-final position after a solid away win over the Lions. If the Cheetahs won, they could secure playoff qualification, but the Cavaliers sought an upset to strengthen their own top-four aspirations.
This weekend’s matches undoubtedly intensified the competition as teams vied for vital semi-final positions.
