Didi Hamann calls Florian Wirtz's Liverpool move a 'misunderstanding'

Didi Hamann, the former Liverpool and Germany midfielder, stated that Florian Wirtz's transfer to Liverpool for £116 million has been a 'huge misunderstanding'. Since his transfer just over a year ago, Wirtz has struggled to perform at Anfield and faced significant criticism for his play this season. Jamie Carragher has been one of the critics, asserting that Wirtz's recent performance against Bournemouth was 'one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt.' Carragher expressed, on his podcast, that although Wirtz has not produced impressive stats, he usually demonstrates a neat and tidy style, but his current form raises concerns.

Hamann noted that he believes Wirtz will depart from Liverpool soon. He mentioned during an interview that even people in England seem to recognize that the situation with Wirtz at Liverpool is fundamentally flawed. He commented on Wirtz's upcoming international performances and suggested that Liverpool might soon 'pull the plug' on the transfer if his form does not improve. Hamann remarked, "What I see is a player who cost a lot of money, played poorly last year, and has had another poor start this year. When you're bought for that much money, naturally, they want you to make the difference in the final third of the game. He's doing that far too rarely."

In addition, Andy Robertson shared that both Wirtz and fellow player Alexander Isak found it difficult to settle in at Liverpool following the tragic death of Diogo Jota. Robertson expressed his sympathy for the new signings, stating, "If I'm talking about the new signings, they're coming into a club that is heartbroken. It took them months to settle in because we didn't care about football. That was the truth of it because we just lost one of your best mates in the changing room."
