Injury setbacks motivate Jordan Neill for Namibia tour

Ireland's bowling all-rounder Jordan Neill expressed that past injury issues have increased his determination to excel in the upcoming one-day series in Namibia. Selected by new head coach Gary Wilson, Neill is part of the five-match series beginning on Thursday in Windhoek (08:30 BST). The 21-year-old made his Ireland debut at 19 in 2025 but faced multiple injuries since his Test debut series in Bangladesh, sidelining him for most of this year.
Neill has made a return to the game, having been drafted by the Amsterdam Flames in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, and is eager to make up for lost time. Reflecting on his struggles, Neill noted some low moments during his recovery. "Coming back, it was almost like even more of a throwing into the deep end kind of thing because you’ve got to swim in Bangladesh," he said, highlighting the difficulty of fast bowling in such challenging conditions.
Excited about the upcoming Test against New Zealand, Neill had hoped to play following his experiences in Bangladesh but was hit with another injury. "That was tough, especially being a Belfast boy," he added. Despite these setbacks, Neill maintains a positive outlook, believing that "everything happens for a reason" and that his early career challenges have prepared him for future obstacles, making him "hungrier to come back harder."
The Namibia tour serves as a crucial preparation for Ireland's World Cup qualifier next year, as Namibia will co-host the 2027 tournament alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe. Neill recognizes this series as an opportunity for players to demonstrate their readiness for the squad and to regain familiarity with the 50-over format.
"With the World Cup coming up this time next year and Namibia co-hosting, this is something we’re all pushing towards," he explained. Noting that injuries among players have opened opportunities for others, he emphasized that this tour could help players establish their positions ahead of significant matches.
"Firstly, it’s just great to get more 50-over cricket in and then secondly, to try to balance out the side as the coaches would want going forward," Neill commented.
