Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo praised Orlando Pirates duo Relebohile Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa for their contributions during the 1-1 draw with Czechia. Bafana managed to equalize thanks to a late penalty by Teboho Mokoena, securing an important point that kept their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.
Mofokeng entered the match at halftime, replacing Jayden Adams, while Makgopa came on for Iqraam Rayners after 66 minutes. Khumalo noted that both players positively influenced the match. "When are we saying 'wow'! He [Mofokeng] came on, he changed the game," Khumalo remarked during an interview on SABC3.
Khumalo further emphasized Makgopa's impact, stating, "I said it, Makgopa will make a difference because when he gets the ball, it doesn't bounce back. He's the only striker that I saw after Mexico to be introduced. Out of five balls, he won four aerial duels and was effective in holding the ball for oncoming players."
Khumalo also underscored the importance of the point Bafana earned against Czechia, arguing that it should not be downplayed. "At the end of the day, you say the point that you probably think is not worth having is the one that will save your soul," he added. "It's a tournament, a tournament is a journey, a marathon. So you don't disrespect what these boys achieved, and that's why I'm saying they can only build from what they've done."
Following Mexico's victory over Korea Republic, the co-hosts confirmed their place in the Round of 32. A win for Bafana against the Asian team would also mark their first-ever advancement to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
