Lakers center target at odds with current team

According to a report, the Los Angeles Lakers' top priority for upgrading their roster this summer is acquiring an upgrade at the center position. Current starting center Deandre Ayton has had moments of strong performance, but many regard him as a disappointment. He has a player option for next season and backup center Jaxson Hayes is set to become a free agent at the end of the month.
For over a year, Utah Jazz big man Walker Kessler has been linked to the Lakers. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but his acquisition has been viewed as an unrealistic expectation for Los Angeles. However, a report from The Athletic suggested there might be a possibility for the Lakers to secure Kessler. Sam Amick noted that Kessler "is at odds" with Utah's front office and is contemplating a departure from the team.
Amick reported, "Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler is at odds with the team’s front office over the current handling of his restricted free agency, league sources told The Athletic. Kessler, the 24-year-old who was selected 22nd overall out of Auburn by the Memphis Grizzlies before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves and eventually the Jazz in 2022, expressed frustration with Utah’s decision not to offer him an extension last summer. Now, with the Jazz using the constraints of restricted free agency to limit his market, sources indicate he is seriously considering playing elsewhere."
Kessler has been considered a prime target for Lakers fans due to his exceptional rebounding and shot-blocking abilities. In his four NBA seasons, he has averaged 9.5 points on 68.1% shooting, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 25.3 minutes per game. Although he appeared in only five games this season due to a torn left labrum, he remains one of the most appealing centers, if not the most attractive, in this year’s free agent class.
The Jazz have the right to match any offer made to Kessler, which complicates the Lakers' pursuit, regardless of Kessler's desire to leave Utah. A significant offer exceeding $30 million may be required for the Jazz to relinquish him, and committing such a large sum to a player with limited offensive skills poses a considerable risk and may be unwise.
