NCAA denies Texas Tech's appeal for QB Sorsby

Reports have emerged that the NCAA rejected Texas Tech's appeal to reinstate quarterback Brendan Sorsby's eligibility. This ruling, confirmed by multiple sources on June 6, 2026, followed Sorsby's earlier acknowledgment of betting on sports, including wagers on his own team while he was at Indiana.
The rejection of Texas Tech's appeal occurs independently of Sorsby's ongoing lawsuit against the NCAA. Sorsby had transferred to Texas Tech in January after his stint as the starter at Cincinnati during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Prior to his time at Cincinnati, Sorsby played for the Hoosiers for two seasons.
As of the ruling, both the NCAA and Sorsby awaited a decision from a Texas judge. Sorsby had filed the lawsuit on May 18, 2026, seeking a temporary injunction that would allow him to compete for the Red Raiders in the current season. On that same day, the university ruled Sorsby ineligible, a move that was necessary for the school to request his reinstatement from the NCAA, which they submitted the next day.
Texas Tech's initial petition for Sorsby’s reinstatement was denied on May 22, prompting the appeal lodged shortly thereafter. University president Lawrence Schovanec had expressed the school’s belief that the NCAA's ruling should be reversed or modified in a letter to the Texas Tech community.
The latest developments included a two-hour hearing on Monday in the 99th District Court in Lubbock County, yet no verdict had been announced as of Friday, with Judge Ken Curry still deliberating on the matter.
This situation reflects broader discussions regarding eligibility and regulatory issues within college athletics, as schools like Texas Tech navigate the complexities of compliance with NCAA rules while advocating for their student-athletes.
